South Shields Transport Interchange shortlisted for Insider award
South Shields Transport Interchange – the £21m statement building in the heart of South Shields town centre – has been shortlisted for this year’s Insider North East Property award in the Design Excellence category.
Insider’s regional property awards are some of the most prominent in the industry. The awards recognise and reward the best development schemes and deals in the last twelve months.
As part of the innovative £100m South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan, delivered by urban regenerator, Muse Developments, in partnership with South Tyneside Council, South Shields Interchange was built by contractor Bowmer & Kirkland, with metro operator Nexus and Morgan Sindall Rail.
The interchange provides a striking design, with the practical solution of combining the metro and bus stations and much-improved accessibility. The interchange also includes a travel shop, two retail units, one of which is now occupied by Greggs, as well as lifts, escalators and stairs to provide improved access to the metro platform. The new bus concourse also provides undercover seating with safety doors to each of the stands which only open when a bus arrives at the station. Real-time information and timetables also improve the passenger experience.
Access to and through the building had to take into account the sheer number of passengers travelling through the station, including athletes at the annual Great North Run the majority of whose 57,000 runners use the Metro at some point during the day, along with their supports and event organisers. Over one million passengers used the facility in the first three months following its opening.
Andrew Fairest, projects director at Muse, said: “The design of the South Shields Interchange was carefully planned in order to blend both a first-class design with the successful integration of public transport and pedestrian movement, providing a more welcoming arrival to the town, with traffic calmed streets and a new public square.
“This project was the result of great teamwork and collaboration between ourselves and our partners. It’s great to see our state-of-the-art facility transform the way passengers move around the town, and we’re are excited to be contributing to the current and future success of South Tyneside.”
The winners will be announced at awards ceremony on Thursday 1 September 2020.
