Plymouth’s Millbay scoops ‘Development of the Year’ in South West Property Awards
The English Cities Fund’s transformation of the Millbay docks area in Plymouth has been crowned ‘Development of the Year’ in Insider's South West Property Awards.
The awards showcase the best work carried out in the region, set against what has been an incredibly challenging and fast-moving landscape.
Millbay is being delivered by The English Cities Fund - a strategic joint venture between national urban regenerator, Muse Developments, Legal and General and Homes England.
A new thriving community has been created with over 550 new homes, 43,000 sq ft of business and retail space, improved infrastructure and refurbished listed docksides, new public realm, a 1,000- pupil school, the 171-berth King Point Marina and Dock Restaurant. The latest phase, Quadrant Wharf, has delivered 137 new homes and takes forward the transformation of the eastern side of the historic former docks.
The judges said the scale of transformation at Millbay and the delivery that has been achieved impressed them along with the focus on place-making. They added the developer clearly faced challenges in site topography and did well to future-proof the scheme against the risk of flooding.
Duncan Cumberland, residential development director at Muse, said: “This is fantastic news for Millbay and is a testament to the true collaborative, long-term approach from partners to reimagine and repurpose an area with great potential.
“The project has been game-changing for Plymouth, creating a thriving new community alongside much-needed amenities for the area.”
The Fund’s multi-million repurposing of Millbay’s inner harbour and listed quay walls has also helped position Plymouth as an internationally acclaimed sailing venue, with SailGP visiting the city following events in San Francisco and New York.
