Plans submitted to bring forward near net zero building in South Shields

The Glassworks - a near net zero building coming to South Shields

A planning application has been submitted by national urban regenerator, Muse Developments and South Tyneside Council, to bring forward one of the first near net zero buildings in the North East region at The Glassworks – a striking 50,000 sq ft riverside office building – at Harton Quay in South Shields.

The proposed development, designed by Ryder Architecture, will repurpose a key area in South Tyneside and be built on brownfield land across five storeys with basement parking, a reception area offering co-working space and coffee bar, as well as a roof terrace with panoramic waterside views.

The southern part of the site will feature a landscaped area leading down to the Grade II-listed Customs House and Harton Quays Park. The scheme will improve links between the river from and the wider town centre regeneration, being delivered by Muse and South Tyneside Council as part of the 365 regeneration masterplan.

If approved, the development would transform vacant brownfield land and would acknowledge the site’s industrial heritage by retaining the chimney and historic wall from the former Swinburne Glassworks.

The Glassworks would pave the way for further office space in a 4.5 hectare section of the 10.5 hectare Holborn site, which was awarded Enterprise Zone status after a successful bid supported by the Local Enterprise Partnership.
