Deal agreed for Manchester’s historic Mackie Mayor building
Muse Developments has agreed a deal with Market Operations Ltd to lease the Grade II Listed Mackie Mayor building in Manchester’s Northern Quarter and complete its transformation.
The historic building will be brought back into public use with nine independent kitchens and bars and communal dining for more than 400 people.
The deal marks the final piece of the jigsaw in the Smithfield regeneration project, which has been the recipient of several accolades in recent years, and is set to give a new lease of life to the former fresh produce market.
Market Operations Ltd have been responsible for the award-winning and highly successful transformation of Altrincham’s historic market and will be seeking to replicate the success of Market House which currently feeds over 8,000 people each week.
National developer and urban regeneration specialist Muse, completed the first stage of the building’s renovation earlier this year and this latest development will result in the faithful restoration and fitting out of the building.
Muse, in partnership with Manchester City Council, led the Smithfield regeneration scheme which has been instrumental in the renaissance of the Northern Quarter creating 350 new homes, more than 400 hotel rooms and 30,000 sq ft of retail space.
Wes Erlam, development director at Muse, said: “Our Smithfield project has been truly transformational for this part of Manchester city centre, creating new homes, business space, hotel rooms and new public space over the past decade.
“We’re really excited to put in place the final piece of the jigsaw and complete a deal with this hugely successful operator. When the fit out works are completed the Mackie Mayor will once again be busy, bustling, and open to the public bringing vibrancy back to this pocket of the Northern Quarter.”
Market Operations has now submitted a planning application and is anticipating an opening in 2017.
