Lewisham Gateway is strategically located at an important transport node in south east London, some 10km from Piccadilly Circus and well served by the A20 and A21 regional roads. It is a major hub for in excess of twenty bus services and there are mainline rail services from Victoria and Charing Cross Stations as well as a terminus of a DLR line to Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge.
The site was previously identified as one of the first ten regeneration schemes in the ‘100 Public Spaces’ programme, and an outline planning application was submitted in 2006. In total, the scheme will deliver around 900 new homes, as well as new retail, restaurant and commercial space and much improved bus, taxi and cycling facilities.
Construction of the first phase, comprising 193 apartments in two blocks of 25 and 15 storeys with ground floor retail space, is nearing completion. Construction of the next phase, two landmark buildings of 15 and 22 storeys buildings providing 169 new homes with ground floor retail and restaurants, is under way.
The site had been dominated by a large and widely unpopular roundabout which cut off the town centre from Lewisham DLR and railway stations. Lewisham Gateway has replaced this outdated layout with a newly configured road system.
Improving The Environment
The site will deliver a major new urban park, with enhanced waterways as a focal point, along with extensive public realm.
This is a public sector led scheme with the aim of healing the urban fabric of Lewisham town centre.
